DIY: patterned flower pots

23 March 2016

Like everyone else I've fallen for the succulent trend. They're majorly cute, easy to take care of and for me it's also a bit of a nostalgic thing because I remember we used to keep some in our old apartment when I was a kid. Since I've been collecting these little plants, I haven't been able to find many flower pots for them that I like. So I got myself some plain white ones and made a small DIY project out of them! After all spring is the season to refresh your interior and add new elements to it, right?

Here's what I used:

3 simple steps:

1. First think of a pattern to use - for inspiration you can always look up "patterns" in Google or Pinterest. My personal favorite and the easiest one to do by hand is a dotty pattern.
2. Next, draw your chosen design on a flower pot in pencil to avoid mistakes.
3. Finish your pattern with a permanent marker and let dry for a while.

Tip: If you should make a mistake, you may try erasing the permanent marker with nail polish remover. The pots I used are made out of bamboo but I think this trick should work on any type of varnished pots.

I know this is basically the easiest DIY ever but it's a great way to recycle old flower pots or add a personal touch to new ones. I got mine at a Dutch shop called Hema, but you can find similar ones (and succulents/cacti too) at Ikea. To keep it minimal, I used a black marker but you can of course use any color you like - silver or golden patterns could also be nice. That's the fun part, you can go any direction you choose with this. Let your creativity run wild!

Happy DIY-ing & happy Spring to you all!

DIY: polka dot travel jar

13 October 2014

The idea of creating my own travel fund jar has been on my mind ever since I stumbled on an example of one on Pinterest. There's nothing that makes me more happy than to travel and discover new places, but my coffee & clothes addiction keeps me from putting enough money aside. So I thought this might motivate me!
I wanted to make it something fun and personal. And I ended up with this colorful dotty one! It looks so cute in my room and I finished it in less than an hour. Feel like making your own?

 Here's what I used:

4 easy steps:

1. The first step is to write down the purpose of your jar, which in my case is to see the world! I practiced a little by writing some random things on a glass bottle.
2. The next thing to do is stick reinforcement labels all over your jar.
3. Color the holes with nail polish and let dry for a while.
4. Then simply take the stickers off and you'll be left with a jar full of cute dots!

Hope this was helpful!
Love, always

DIY: floral tissue box

04 April 2014

Imagine: You're watching a movie and this really sad scene comes up and you just can't help but bawl your eyes out. You look around... Damn it! No tissues in the room. It may sound silly but this happens to me all the time (what can I say, I'm an emotional gal). I keep telling myself to get a box of tissues but I always forget. So when I found this wooden box I decided to create my own unique piece that I can once and for all make a part of my interior. And of course that had to involve flowers.

Here's what I used:

5 simple steps:

1. First mix some paint with a tiny bit of water (a few drops will do).
2. Start with the top and then paint the sides. To make the painting easier, I put my box onto some old dictionaries.
3. Let dry, apply a second coat and let dry again. I let it rest for about 4 hours.
4. Once the box is painted you can choose where you want to place the flowers. For each flower, mark with a little dot.
5. Now you can easily attach the flowers to the box with a bit of superglue.

Done!

Hope you enjoyed this!
Have a lovely day!

DIY: painting a vintage frame

14 March 2014

A while back, I spotted this cute frame in the thrift store and just had to have it. Since then it's been standing in my room without purpose and so I thought I'd do something fun with it. I absolutely love mint accents in a room which made me decide to get crafty and give my frame a fresh new color! I'm really happy with how it turned out. In for a super easy DIY?

Here's what you'll need:

4 simple steps:

1. I couldn't find a picture large enough to fit the frame, so I took an old atlas and cut out a map that I liked. I suppose it can serve as an ode to my wanderlust. Another fun idea would be to make a collage of several smaller photos.
2. Sand the frame a little bit so that the paint will stick better and remove all dust and dirt.
3. Cover your floor with old newspapers or whatever you find. Before you go ahead and start painting the frame, it's best that you practice spraying a bit since it can be tricky. Another tip: Read the description on the spray can, it'll tell you at what distance to hold the can while spraying.
4. Let it dry for a while (long enough, I was too enthusiastic and got my hands full of paint) and it's ready to go up on the wall!

Hope this inspired you to give your own old stuff a make-over.
Have a good Friday!
