Tuscany Travel Diary - Day 2: Pisa

09 August 2015

Honestly the only reason I wanted to go to Pisa was to eat pizza and take that obligatory 'leaning against the tower photo' but the city turned out to be more than just the Piazza dei Miracoli, which is by the way super crowded. I much more enjoyed the less touristic places like the Piazza dei Cavalieri or The Knight's Square where you'll find a statue of Cosimo de' Medici. I love anything to do with the Medici family ever since watching Da Vinci's Demons.

A little closer to the Arno, in the medieval heart of Pisa, Piazza delle Vettovaglie is situated. It's a small square with a daily food market offering many Italian specialities. And talking about specialities, just around the corner of the piazza at La Bottega del Gelato you can eat some of the city's best gelato while looking out on the Ponte di Mezzo. If you arrive in Pisa by train like we did, this will probably be the bridge you'll cross on the way to Piazza dei Miracoli.

Traveling through Tuscany by train is fairly easy (and cheap!) but it does have some disadvantages. For example, I wish we could've explored more of Pisa's countryside too. We took the bus from Pisa to Florence when we arrived in Italy and on the way we passed these magical fields full of sunflowers. Sadly you can't just hop off the bus or the train wherever you want. So I'd definitely like to do a road trip through the area in a few years as well.

Happy Sunday! ❤
